Monster Brown Trout of Grey Reef Wyoming

Welcome to Casper, Wyoming home to the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River, and a true step back in time. This western tail water fishery has always been known to locals as a great place to fly fish for trout. It was not until the mid nineteen nineties that this particular section of the North Platte River began to grow in popularity among fly fisherman. On a daily basis the river gives up rainbow trout in the twenty inch class, which would please most anglers, but trout that exceed the 25inch class are caught weekly here, making Grey Reef arguably the best rainbow trout fishery in the lower 48 states.

The forgotten fish of Grey Reef are the brown trout, which is understandable because the overall population of brown trout in the river is very small. This statistic is often realized when fisherman try spending hours chucking and stripping streamers only to leave many anglers without a single fish. On the occasion when one of these big bruisers does chase down a streamer the fight is on! A stout rod, strong leader, and a blessing from above are all needed to land one of these horses. Hiring a local guide also helps your odds on catching these fish. These guys know the places these fish like to hang out and what streamers have the best chance to entice their appetite. The Grey Reef is best fished from a drift boat due to its extensive tracks of private property and lack of foot access.
